Headers on Target

Headed shot attempts directed on target that require a save, are blocked on the goal line, or result in a goal.

Shots on Target

Shots on Target measures how many of a player's or team's shots are on course to enter the goal, requiring a save from the goalkeeper or resulting in a goal. A shot counts as "on target" when it's heading into the goal, and only a save, a block on the line, or the woodwork stops it. A striker who fires 10 shots in a match, with 4 forcing a save and 6 flying wide or over, recorded 4 shots on target. While the definition is straightforward, a few scenarios are worth understanding. A shot that hits the post or crossbar and stays out is not counted as a shot on target because it wasn't stopped by the goalkeeper. On the other hand, a deflected shot that still requires a save, or ends up in the net, is counted. For teams, Shots on Target is simply the total number of on-target efforts recorded over a match or season. It provides a clear indication of how often a team is forcing the opposition goalkeeper into action.

Shot Conversion Rate

Shot Conversion Rate measures the percentage of a player's or team's shots that result in goals. It shows their efficiency while taking shots, making it a useful metric for evaluating finishing quality. Imagine a striker taking 10 shots in a match and scoring 2 goals. That gives them a 20% shot conversion rate, meaning 1 in every 5 shots resulted in a goal. It's a simple way to measure how efficiently chances are converted. Shot conversion rate focuses on the outcome and doesn't consider whether the shot was a close-range tap-in or a strike from 30 yards. It simply measures how many shots became goals. Because of its simplicity, it has long been one of football's most widely used finishing metrics, even before advanced statistics like Expected Goals (xG). The calculation is the same for both players and teams. For a player, it's goals divided by total shots. For a team, it's team goals divided by team shots. Over the course of a season, shot conversion rate provides a straightforward measure of finishing efficiency, showing how effectively shots are turned into goals.
