Noni Madueke: Wing-backed ambition
Arsenal’s interest in Noni Madueke signals a shift in how Mikel Arteta wants his forward line to look next season. He wants it to be more direct, more chaotic, and more unpredictable. The Chelsea winger, 23, has been a livewire presence in flashes, and with the Blues stacking up attacking reinforcements, the door is now slightly ajar. Arsenal are all set to capitalize on the opportunity. Madueke offers something Arsenal’s current wide options don’t always bring: raw, vertical dribbling. He loves isolating defenders one-on-one, cutting inside and creating space where there shouldn’t be any. Though his goal and assist numbers haven’t exploded yet - only 7 goals and 3 assists in the Premier League last season, his underlying metrics, specifically in progressive carries - 97.5th percentile and dribbles completed - 94.8th percentile respectively suggest a breakout is brewing. At the Emirates, with a bit more structure around him, that potential could finally translate into an end product. Considering non-penalty goals and expected assists together, Madueke ranks surprisingly high at 93.6 percentile.
Zubimendi: The midfield metronome arrives
Zumbimendi's signing isn't one about potential. It’s about pedigree. Martín Zubimendi, signed from Real Sociedad, is already one of the most tactically intelligent midfielders in Europe. A deep-lying orchestrator, he’s made over 230 appearances for La Real. Zubimendi doesn’t do flash. He does control. His passing range, positional discipline, and ability to receive under pressure make him ideal for Arteta’s midfield blueprint — especially when Arsenal are planning for a post-Partey transition. Last season, he boasted a 91% pass accuracy in his own half and 78% accuracy in the opposition half. Defensively, the 26-year-old makes 1.2 interceptions per game and recovers close to 4 balls per match. To put the demand on the Spanish international into context, Xavi’s Barcelona were looking to bring him in as a replacement for Sergio Busquets back in 2023. Liverpool too, missed out on the player despite strong interest in signing him for the 2024/25 season. While he may not be the best in goals or assists, the Spaniard ticks all the right boxes for Artetea and his side. Moreover, his arrival also marks the reunion for the Real Sociedad midfield duo of Mikel Merino, who joined the Gunners from Spain back in August 2024. Merino and Zumbimendi shared the pitch on 169 occasions for both club and country.
Gyökeres: Do the goals translate?
Then there’s the big swing - Viktor Gyökeres. With Benjamin Šeško opting to stay at Leipzig, Arsenal turned their attention to Sporting’s powerhouse striker — and on pure numbers, it’s hard to argue. The 28-year-old bagged 39 league goals for Sporting CP last season — a frankly absurd tally. He also added 7 assists, took 127 shots, and created 61 chances. Those are top-tier numbers by any metric. Even his 4.2 shots per game is a significant chunk of Arsenal's as a whole, which stands a little above 14. But dig a little deeper, and the data gets complicated. A chunk of those goals came against some of the weakest sides in Europe as per global club rankings. The question is: can he replicate that output in the Premier League, week in, week out? Arteta clearly sees something worth betting on. Gyökeres offers a physical presence Arsenal have lacked — a striker who bullies centre-backs, crashes the box, and scores ugly goals as much as beautiful ones. It’s a different tool for a team that sometimes looked too neat.
