How Sense Impact Score Redefines Soccer

Beyond the Scoreline

4 min read

The scoreboard lies.

We’ve all seen it. A 1–0 win where your team barely touched the ball. A 2–2 draw where you dominated, but two lapses cost everything. Results tell you what happened, not why it happened.

That’s why we built the Sense Impact Score.

Unlike xG, which only cares about shots, Sense Impact Score looks at every single action on the pitch. Passes, dribbles, tackles, interceptions, saves — all of them are measured by how much they changed the chances of scoring or conceding in that moment. In other words, it doesn’t just record the game; it measures its heartbeat.

Match Level – Who Really Controlled the Game?

One number. That’s all it takes to see who tilted the game their way. A high positive score? Your team’s actions kept pushing the needle forward. A negative score? The opponent dictated terms. When it hovers around zero, you know it was a knife-edge battle decided by the slimmest margins.

But we don’t stop at the headline number. We break it down into passing, shooting, dribbling, defending and goalkeeping — the categories that actually decide where control came from. Maybe it was a masterclass in ball circulation. Maybe your backline carried the night. Maybe your keeper’s saves alone swung the match.

This is the match report that cuts through noise. No clichés, no excuses — just clarity on who really had control.

Match Spotlight – The Moments That Shifted Everything

Every game boils down to a few moments. That line-breaking ball that sliced open a defence. The crunching tackle that stopped a counter dead. The dribble that pulled three defenders out of shape.

Sense Impact Score isolates those exact moments in a Top Events library, ranked by impact. Instead of wading through ninety minutes, you jump straight to the heartbeat of the match. You see which plays actually changed the story — not just the ones that made the highlights.

This is where a game’s turning points live.

Player Level – The Unsung Heroes Come Alive

Soccer is a team sport, but individuals make the difference. And often, the ones who matter most don’t get the headlines.

With Sense Impact Score, we build leaderboards and player reports that reveal the real difference-makers. The midfielder whose interceptions stopped danger before it even started. The full-back whose progressive passes flipped the pitch. The goalkeeper whose reflex save kept the season alive.

This isn’t about just who scored. It’s about who mattered most. And for clubs, that means sharper recruitment, smarter player development, and a clearer view of who’s adding value week after week.

Why This Changes the Game

At its core, Sense Impact Score is about truth. The truth of who controlled the game, the truth of which actions decided it, the truth of which players really drove impact.

Built on VAEP (Valuing Actions by Estimating Probabilities) - a peer-reviewed, widely adopted framework that evaluates every action by its effect on scoring or conceding.

How we enhanced it:

Proven foundation: Started from the published VAEP methodology, tested across leagues and validated in research. Modern models: Trained gradient boosting (XGBoost) on 4,000+ matches to predict scoring and conceding probabilities. Context-rich features: Every action is judged within the flow of play, using lag features from the previous two actions to capture buildup and sustained pressure.

What drives the model:

Spatial context: Action start/end points, distance/angle to goal, ball travel, plus relation to prior two actions. Action detail: Type (pass, duel, shot, dribble, clearance), body part, success/failure, live play vs restart. Game state: Period, scoreline, and match time - so a late clearance is weighted differently from an early one. Sequential context: Previous two actions’ type, success, direction, and possession outcome. Boolean signals: Goalkeeper involvement, possession retained/switched, action success.

Why it’s reliable:

ur models perform on par with VAEP benchmarks, enriched with contextual features for greater actionability, proving the Sense Impact Score is faithful to the methodology but sharper with modern enhancements.

Unlike basic stats (goals, assists, xG), Sense Impact Score captures hidden impact:

Progressive line-breaking passes that raise scoring probability.

Risky turnovers that increase conceding chances.

Subtle but vital actions like recycles or pressure-relieving clearances.

The scoreboard tells you the result.

Sense Impact Score tells you the story.

And over a season, that story reveals everything: who’s truly dominant, who’s running on thin margins, and who’s quietly shaping games without anyone noticing.

Soccer has always been about moments. Now, we finally know which ones matter most.

What Should a Technical Director Look for in a Soccer Analytics and Scouting Platform?

Choosing soccer technology has become a much bigger decision for modern clubs, with different priorities, perspectives, and factors to take into account. A Technical Director may be looking for better match analysis, a Head of Scouting may want a faster way to benchmark players, while the coaching staff needs opposition reports before the next fixture. Meanwhile, academy staff need a practical way to track player development across the pathway. The problem begins when different departments rely on different tools. Match footage sits in one system, tagged events in another, scouting reports in spreadsheets, and performance data with a separate provider. By the time that information reaches a recruitment or coaching meeting, staff can spend more time bringing it together than actually using it. The challenge, then, goes beyond finding good software. The right platform should give the soccer department a shared view of the information and make it easier to move from raw data and video to informed decisions. This is where a modern soccer analytics platform can add real value. This guide looks at the key areas Technical Directors, Sporting Directors and soccer operations teams should consider when evaluating soccer video analysis software, soccer analytics platforms and soccer scouting software.
